The Department of Surgery for Newborns and Premature Infants is designed to provide emergency and planned specialized surgical care to patients aged 0 to 6 months from all regions of the Republic of Belarus. The department began functioning in the structure of the Russian National Research Center for Pediatric Surgery, inheriting almost half a century of experience of the Belarusian Children‘s Surgical Center in the surgical treatment of newborns and children of the first months of life with congenital and acquired surgical pathology.

Department structure

The department has 10 beds. The department is headed by a pediatric surgeon of the first qualification category Malyshko Elena Ivanovna. Inpatient care in the department is provided by 2 pediatric surgeons, a neonatologist, a senior nurse, a treatment room nurse, and 9 post nurses. About 400 patients are treated at the department every year, and more than 300 surgical procedures are performed, half of which are high-tech and complex. The department is also the training base of the Department of Pediatric Surgery with a refresher and retraining course at BSMU, students are being trained, interns, clinical residents and graduate students are being trained, and specialized specialists are undergoing postgraduate training.

Department staff

The medical staff of the department is represented by highly qualified specialists who have completed internships in clinics near and far abroad. The staff of the department regularly attends various congresses, symposiums and conferences on pediatric surgery and neonatology.

Medical care provided

Most of the department‘s patients are children with severe congenital malformations such as esophageal atresia, diaphragmatic hernia, cystic adenomatous lung transformation, congenital high and low intestinal obstruction, intestinal fixation disorder, pyloric stenosis, Hirschsprung‘s disease, biliary tract atresia, rectal atresia, abdominal cystic formations, cystic ovarian degeneration, lymphatic malformations transferred from pediatric and surgical departments of other hospitals and in need of examination and surgical treatment. A significant part of the department‘s nosology is occupied by patients with purulentseptic diseases: infected incomplete umbilical fistula, abscesses and pseudofuruncles of various localization, acute purulent mastitis and acute subcutaneous paraproctitis, acute hematogenous osteomyelitis. Thanks to the long-term successful work of the team, the clinic has accumulated a unique experience of surgical treatment.:

  • surgical treatment of newborns with surgical NEC stage

  • surgical treatment of biliary tract atresia

  • treatment of purulent-inflammatory diseases in newborns and younger children

  • postoperative support and rehabilitation of children after correction of congenital malformations
